Michigan Cable Companies Already Pay Millions

Michigan cable providers already pay millions in taxes to support state and local governments through business taxes and local franchise fees.

Statewide, Michigan citizens already pay more than $80 million in cable TV taxes to local municipalities in the form of franchise fees.

Any additional taxes will have to be paid by Michigan consumers — YOU and YOUR family!

Michigan citizens and businesses should not have to pay more in taxes simply to watch TV. The average Michigan cable TV customer already pays $35 annually in cable TV taxes and fees. This legislation would increase that amount by 40 percent to almost $50 annually.

Michigan has one of the nation's highest unemployment rates. Since 2007, businesses and residents in our state have been hit with huge increases in their taxes. Given the state of today's economy, it seems outrageous for the Legislature to even consider an increase on our cable TV bill. Whether this proposed increase is called a surcharge, fee, or otherwise, you should urge your legislators to VOTE No on Senate Bill 636 and House Bill 5047. Tax increases on services such as cable TV will only discourage investment, harm job creation, and anger consumers, something Michigan cannot afford.
